Shawn Stoval

Shawn Stoval is experienced in structuring, trading, and managing risk across various forms of credit derivatives. He is currently the Chief Investment Officer and co-founder of Varden Pacific LLC, a registered Investment Advisor that manages a successful hedge fund focused on structured products.
Prior to launching Varden Pacific, Mr. Stoval was an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley, charged with investing the firm’s capital in structured products through the depths of the Credit Crisis, achieving stellar returns. Before his proprietary trading role, Mr. Stoval was the Head of the Americas for Structured Credit Client Trading at Morgan Stanley. Mr. Stoval was responsible for structuring and trading USD tens of billions of structured products including corporate-backed synthetic collateralized debt obligations, levered super seniors, and interest only / principal only derivatives. In this capacity, Mr. Stoval was an expert in designing and constructing pricing models, making markets, managing risk, hedging, navigating rating agency models/processes, negotiating legal documentation, creating operational systems, establishing operating guidelines and policies, and monitoring franchise risk. He created dozens of securities issued out of Special Purpose Vehicles with a custom tailored risk profile that met client specific tax and accounting goals. Mr. Stoval was promoted on the fastest possible pace during his five years at Morgan Stanley.
Mr. Stoval was a Robert C. Byrd Scholar while at Yale, graduating with a B.A. in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry. He also holds an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, receiving academic distinction each quarter.
