Jury Finds That Talcum Powder Causes Cancer

Juries in three recent Missouri cases have awarded verdicts totaling $200 million to women who alleged that Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder caused them to suffer ovarian cancer. In all three cases, the women argued that Johnson & Johnson has been aware for a long period of time that its talc caused cancer, but the company failed to notify or warn consumers of this known danger. This is the same type of claim made for many years in cigarette cases—that the tobacco companies knew for decades that smoking caused lung cancer but failed and refused to put warnings on cigarette packages because the warnings would hurt sales. Major corporations often know a great deal about the dangers of their highly-profitable products but refuse to disclose such important information because they value profits above human safety.
