A federal court jury in California awarded $13 million dollars to the surviving family members of a man who died as the result of years of exposure to asbestos in a sugar refinery near his home. The man died from a cancer called mesothelioma, which is known to be caused by inhalation of tiny particles of asbestos. Although the man did not work at the refinery himself, members of his family did, and it was shown that asbestos collected on workers' clothing and shoes and was then spread throughout the town. The corporation that owned the sugar refinery knew there was asbestos in the facility, but did nothing to clean it up even though it has been well known for decades that exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma.
